Allowances
| Allowance | Unit | Amount |
|---|---|---|
Evening Shift Premium For each hour worked in your hospital's evening shift (a 7.5-hour window set in its local appendix, often 15:00–23:00). On a day shift that runs into the evening, paid only once more than 2 hours fall in the window. Also paid on overtime hours. Not part of the straight-time rate (14.10) | Per Hour | $2.25 |
Night Shift Premium For each hour worked in your hospital's night shift (a 7.5-hour window set locally, often 23:00–07:00). Same 2-hour rule on a day shift. Also paid on overtime hours (14.10) | Per Hour | $2.98 |
Weekend Premium For each hour worked from midnight Friday to midnight Sunday, or another 48-hour period agreed locally (some hospitals start at 23:15 or 23:30 Friday). Stacks with the evening or night premium. Not paid when you are already on a consecutive-weekends scheduling premium (14.03), or to unit weekend workers (14.15) | Per Hour | $3.14 |
Team, Unit or Group Leader When you are assigned to direct or supervise others in your classification, or given overall responsibility for patient care on the unit for a tour. Paid on top of your salary and any other premium (19.04(b)) | Per Hour | $4.00 |
Student Supervision For every hour spent supervising nursing students. Not paid to classifications rated above the RN grid partly for this work (9.08(a)) | Per Hour | $2.00 |
Mentorship For a formal, assigned mentorship role with a designated nurse. Orientation to the unit is not mentorship (9.08(c)) | Per Hour | $2.00 |
Standby For each hour of standby the hospital schedules outside your regular hours. Stops while you are called in and working (14.07) | Per Hour | $3.45 |
Standby on a Paid Holiday Standby that falls on one of your hospital's paid holidays (14.07) | Per Hour | $5.05 |
Overtime Meal A hot meal, or this amount if the hospital can't provide one: on a second consecutive full tour, or after more than 2 hours of overtime on the same day as a full tour (which also earns a paid half-hour meal period) (14.14) | Per Meal | $6.00 |
Night Travel Travelling to or from work between midnight and 06:00, or at any time while on standby: a taxi, or your own car at this rate per kilometre (or hospital policy if greater) (14.13) | Per km | $0.22 |
Education Allowance Each hospital keeps its own existing education allowances; the provincial agreement sets no amount. A BScN allowance is not payable to nurses hired on or after 1 April 2017 (19.09). For example, The Ottawa Hospital's local appendix pays a monthly amount for a recognised certification, a nursing bachelor's degree or a master's degree — the amounts MyRoster offers in Settings › Allowances | Per Month | Set locally |
Overtime & premium rates
Work beyond the daily tour (7.5 hours, or 11.25 on a 12-hour tour) or beyond the full-time averaged hours. Part-time and casual nurses also get 150% after 75 hours in two weeks. Shift premiums are still paid on overtime hours; the part-time percentage in lieu is not (14.01)
Additional hours after a full tour worked on a paid holiday, on an overtime tour or on a premium (150%) tour, and hours beyond a normal shift after a call-back from standby (14.04)
Working a scheduled day off is 150%; working a scheduled day off that is also a paid holiday is 200% (14.01(a))
All hours worked on the holiday. Full-time nurses also get a paid lieu day of 7.5 hours, even after a 12-hour tour. Part-time and casual nurses get 150% but no lieu day, because holiday pay is in their percentage in lieu (15.05, 15.08)
Called back after completing your tour and leaving the hospital, or called in from standby: double time for all hours, at least 4 hours at double time (only up to the start of your regular shift if they overlap). Full-time and regular part-time nurses (14.06)
All hours of the next shift worked after a schedule change with less than 48 hours' notice (full-time) or 24 hours (part-time); 200% if that shift is already a premium tour (14.12)
Time worked beyond your normal daily hours when patient care stops you taking your meal break and you tell the hospital (13.01(d))
From November 2025: up to 15 minutes of report after your tour is paid at the rate of the tour just worked. If report runs over 15 minutes, the whole report period is overtime at 150% (Price award, para 69)
Reporting for a scheduled shift without having been told not to come in pays at least 4 hours at straight time (14.05)
Part-time and casual nurses are paid this on every straight-time hour instead of benefits, holiday pay and pension. HOOPP (pension plan) members get 10%. Not included when overtime or premiums are worked out (19.01(c), (d))
Notes
- •Rates are hourly. Full-time is 37.5 hours a week (75 a fortnight), averaged over the hospital's schedule: a normal tour pays 7.5 hours with an unpaid half-hour meal, and a 12-hour tour pays 11.25 hours with 45 minutes unpaid. The agreement prints no annual salaries; the annual figure shown is the hourly rate × 37.5 hours × 52 weeks.
- •This agreement was set by interest arbitration: Ontario hospital nurses cannot strike, so terms the parties don't settle are decided by an arbitrator. The award of 3 September 2025 covers 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2027 and the agreement keeps applying after that until it is replaced. ONA publishes the agreement as a draft with tracked changes (Draft 3) that it describes as in effect and enforceable; it can't be finalised until a hearing settles how the new paid report time is implemented. Bargaining for the next agreement is scheduled for March 2027.
- •Across-the-board increases: 3.0% from 1 April 2025 and 2.25% from 1 April 2026. The 2025 increase was paid retroactively within four pay periods of the award, on hours paid.
- •One provincial grid covers every RN: Start, then 1 to 8 years. Full-time nurses move up a step 12 months after their last increase; part-time and casual nurses move up a step for every 1,500 hours worked. New hires are placed one step for each year of related nursing experience, including outside Ontario.
- •Part-time and casual nurses are paid 14% on top of every straight-time hour instead of benefits, holiday pay and pension, or 10% if they join the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP). The percentage isn't included when premiums or overtime are worked out. The part-time rows above are the totals ONA prints.
- •The agreement covers registered nurses and nurse practitioners. The 2025 award also set a three-step registered practical nurse (RPN) grid, but only for Smooth Rock Falls Hospital — ONA's highlights headline it as a provincial RPN grid, but the award limits it to that hospital — so it is not shown here. Most Ontario hospital RPNs belong to other unions (CUPE, SEIU, Unifor, OPSEU) whose central agreements set increases while each hospital sets the rates.
- •Each hospital also has an Appendix of Local Provisions. It sets the clock times of the evening and night shifts (for example 15:00–23:00 and 23:00–07:00 at Hamilton Health Sciences and The Ottawa Hospital), when the weekend premium starts, its 12 paid holidays and any education allowance. Other ONA classifications, such as Clinical Nurse Specialist or Educator, are paid on the hospital's own Appendix 3 grid, kept at the same percentage differential from the RN grid.
- •Shift, weekend, team leader, preceptor and standby premiums are flat dollar amounts that stack. Overtime and holiday multipliers apply to the straight-time rate only, but the evening or night shift premium is still paid on overtime hours. Whether the weekend premium is also paid on overtime hours isn't settled by the text and depends on the hospital; MyRoster doesn't add it.
- •Paid holidays: 12 a year for full-time nurses, named in each hospital's local appendix. Holiday pay is 7.5 hours at the straight-time rate. Working a holiday pays 150% for every hour, plus a 7.5-hour lieu day for full-time nurses (12-hour tour nurses get 12 lieu days of 7.5 hours). A holiday on a scheduled day off gives full-time nurses another paid day off.
- •Paid report time: from November 2025, up to 15 minutes of report after your tour is paid at the rate of that tour and doesn't count towards overtime or a call-back. If report runs over 15 minutes, the whole report period is paid as overtime at 150%. (The arbitrator's order runs 60 days from the award, to 2 November 2025; ONA's highlights say 1 November.)
- •Full-time vacation: 3 weeks after 1 year, 4 weeks after 3 years, 5 after 11, 6 after 20 and 7 after 25. Part-time and casual nurses are paid vacation pay as 6% to 14% of gross earnings, counting 1,500 hours as a year of service.
- •A full-time nurse may take time off at the premium rate (1.5 hours off for each overtime hour) instead of overtime pay, except for hours worked on a holiday. Overtime meal: a hot meal or $6.00.

Notes
- •These are provincial minimum hourly rates, new in the 2025 arbitration award. Hospitals pay nurse practitioners on their own local grids, and many pay more than the minimum. From 3 September 2025 any NP whose rate (after the 3.0% increase of 1 April 2025) was below the minimum for their years of service moved up to it, and every hospital's NP grid must reach its top step in no more than 8 years (9 steps including the start rate).
- •Every NP also received the 3.0% increase of 1 April 2025 on their own local rate. The minimums rise with the 2.25% increase of 1 April 2026.
- •The premiums, overtime and holiday rules are the same as for registered nurses — see the Registered Nurses tab. The annual figure shown is the hourly rate × 37.5 hours × 52 weeks; the agreement prints no annual salaries.
