Notes

  • •Rates are hourly, as printed in the Salary Appendix, which prints no annual salaries. Full-time hours are 7.75 a day and 36.81 a week averaged over the rotation (Article 7.01). Annual figures here use 1,920.75 hours a year, the regular hours the agreement treats as a year for part-time and casual increments (Article 30.01(c)), so read them as a guide.
  • •The agreement runs from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2028 and took effect on ratification; the 1 April 2025 increase was paid back to that date. Each 1 April adds 3%, and every scale has an even 4% between steps (Letter of Understanding #35).
  • •At ratification every nurse moved up one step (Letter of Understanding #35): a step was added at the top and the old Step 1 removed, so from that date each step pays what the next step paid on 1 April 2025, and the new Step 9 is 4% above the old one. Anniversary dates and increment hours carry on. The agreement does not print the ratification date. The 4 April 2025 column uses the date Alberta Health Services ratified it; other employers may differ, and the first April 2025 column applied until then.
  • •Except where stated, the agreement applies from 1 April 2024 or ratification, whichever is later (Article 1.01). So the raised allowances (responsibility, in charge, preceptor, on-call, vehicle, mileage and travel meals) start at ratification; the first April 2025 column shows the previous agreement's amounts, which applied until then. Evening, night and weekend premiums and education allowances did not change.
  • •Full-time nurses move up a step after each year of service. Part-time and casual nurses move up after 1,920.75 regular hours, then every 1,711.50 regular hours (Article 30). Previous RN or RPN experience is credited year for year up to the top step (Article 27).
  • •The Basic Rate of Pay is the step rate plus any education allowance and Long Service Pay Adjustment (Article 2.03), so overtime, holiday and leave pay include both. Shift and weekend premiums and other allowances are not part of it and are paid at face value.
  • •All overtime is double time (Article 8.02). It can be banked as time off at the overtime rate. A part-time nurse who agrees to extra shifts is paid straight time up to 7.75 hours a day. Casual nurses are paid overtime on hours over 147.25 averaged over a four-week period, and on an extended shift past 7.75 hours unless they are covering an extended-day line. More than 4 hours of overtime after a shift earns a meal and snacks at no cost (provided, not paid).
  • •Extended work day rosters (Article 37): 12-hour shifts pay 11.08 hours (36.93 hours a week averaged, two unpaid meal breaks) and 10-hour shifts pay 9.75 hours (37.05 a week). Named Holidays and lieu days are worth 7.75 hours on these rosters.
  • •Named Holidays (Article 18): New Year's Day, Alberta Family Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, August Civic Holiday, Labour Day, Thanksgiving Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, plus a Floater, any day proclaimed a holiday by Alberta or Canada, and one municipal civic holiday where the site is. Easter Monday is not a Named Holiday. The holiday rate is paid for all hours worked on the holiday.
  • •Part-time and casual nurses receive 5% of regular earnings in lieu of Named Holidays. Casual nurses also receive vacation pay with each pay: 6% in the first year, 8% in years 2 to 9, 10% in years 10 to 19, 12% in years 20 to 24 and 12.4% from year 25 (Article 30.03).
  • •On call pays $7.00 an hour. A call-back pays the hours worked or 3 hours, whichever is longer, at the overtime rate, on top of the on-call pay. Telephone consultation while on call is paid at the overtime rate on the total time spent, with a 30-minute minimum per on-call period (Article 9).
  • •Vacation for full-time staff nurses and assistant head nurses is 15 working days in the first year, 20 in years 2 to 9, 25 in years 10 to 19 and 30 from year 20 (Article 17). Sick leave builds up at 1.5 working days a month (Article 19).
  • •Covers registered nurses, registered psychiatric nurses, graduate nurses and undergraduate nurses at Alberta Health Services, Assisted Living Alberta, The Bethany Group (Camrose), Cancer Care Alberta, Covenant Health, Emergency Health Services, Give Life Alberta, Health Shared Services, Lamont Health Care Centre, Primary Care Alberta and Recovery Alberta. There is no nurse practitioner scale. Licensed practical nurses are on the AUPE agreement (see the LPN tab).
