Penalty Rates
Premium on the hourly rate for night shifts, reflected in the Shift Allowance column of the pay schedule (Appendix 3A / Appendix 1).
Premium on the hourly rate for Saturday work (Appendix 3A / Appendix 1).
Premium on the hourly rate for Sunday work (Appendix 3A / Appendix 1).
One week of ordinary pay has been rolled into the base hourly rate (since the 2008-2011 Collective Agreement) in lieu of public-holiday penalties, alongside additional leave entitlements — no separate cash penalty applies (Appendix 3A; cl 40.10(b)).
Part-time employees are the exception to the roll-in and are paid double time and a half for all hours worked on a public holiday (cl 40.10(b)).
Payable on top of the casual loaded rate, per the Section 190 Undertaking accepted by the Fair Work Commission (Appendix 4, item 3(d)), which governs over the differently-worded cl 26(c).
Any work performed outside the ordinary hours prescribed in cl 23.1 is deemed overtime and paid at double time.
Double time and a half of the base rate for all time worked past two hours after shift cessation (the first two hours are at the 200% overtime rate). Does not apply to Immediate Call Backs.
An employee recalled for duty outside rostered hours — including call-outs or overtime shifts offered with less than 90 minutes' notice — is paid at overtime rates for a minimum of three hours.
If directed to keep working without the minimum break between shifts (11 hours between consecutive 11-hour shifts, 10.5 hours between 12-hour shifts, 10 hours between 13-hour shifts), the employee is paid double time until released. Does not apply on an on-call roster.
Casuals are paid the hourly base rate plus a 25% loading, with a minimum three-hour engagement; only AP1-and-above classifications may be employed casually (cl 26(a)).
Calculated on four weeks of the weekly base rate or the Shift Allowance for those four weeks, whichever is greater (currently the Shift Allowance). Annual leave is four consecutive weeks per year.
Notes
- •These figures are the total annual salary in Australian dollars from the agreement's pay schedule (Appendix 1). Rates rose in three steps: 1 July 2024 (back-paid on the agreement's commencement), 1 July 2025 and 1 July 2026.
- •The agreement was approved by the Fair Work Commission on 15 July 2025, commenced on 22 July 2025 and has a nominal expiry of 30 June 2027. It covers employees of St John Ambulance WA, the primary ambulance provider for metropolitan and regional Western Australia.
- •Night, Saturday and Sunday shifts attract loadings of 15%, 50% and 75% of the hourly rate (shown under Penalties). Public-holiday pay for full-time staff is rolled into the base hourly rate plus additional leave rather than paid as a separate penalty; part-time employees instead receive 250% for public-holiday hours, and casuals receive a 150% loading on top of their casual loaded rate.
- •Casual employment is limited to Ambulance Paramedic classifications (AP1 and above), with a 25% loading and a minimum three-hour engagement.
- •The Camping Without Facilities, Deployment and Night Shift Payment allowances were introduced by this agreement and only became payable from its commencement on 22 July 2025; the Working with Volunteer Allowance applies from 1 July 2024, except for Community Paramedics, for whom it applies from commencement.
- •Job sharers are paid a pro-rata salary, and some positions are acting positions paid at that rate only while rostered into the role or for the duration of a temporary appointment.
- •Hourly conversions on this page assume a 38-hour week; the agreement itself rosters shifts of 11 to 13 hours.

Notes
- •These figures are the minimum weekly full-time rates in Australian dollars from the Fair Work Ombudsman pay guide, applying from the first full pay period on or after 28 October 2025.
- •This federal modern award is the safety net for ambulance and patient-transport employees not covered by an enterprise agreement — most WA paramedics are employed under the St John WA agreement shown on the other tab.
- •The Annual Wage Review 2026 lifted all modern-award rates by 4.75% from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026; the rates shown here pre-date that increase.
- •Part-time employees are paid the hourly equivalent of these weekly rates. Casual, weekend, overtime and public-holiday rates are published in the pay guide but are not reproduced here.
- •Hourly conversions on this page assume the award's standard 38-hour week.
