Penalty Rates

Early/late work — 17:00 to 07:00 (cl 23.1(a))115%

A 15% penalty on the base rate for all time worked between 17:00 and 07:00 on a day other than a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday. Does not apply to Bus Operators on split shifts.

Sign-off at or after 20:00 — whole shift (cl 23.1(b))115%

A rostered shift that signs off at or after 20:00 attracts the 15% penalty for the whole shift, not just the hours after 20:00.

Saturday (cl 23.2(a))150%

Time and a half for all Saturday work.

Sunday (cl 23.2(b))200%

Double time for all Sunday work.

Span of hours — 9.5 to 10.5 hours (cl 23.5(a))150%

Work beyond a span of 9.5 consecutive hours in a day is paid at time and a half, up to 10.5 hours.

Span of hours — beyond 10.5 hours (cl 23.5(b))200%

Work beyond a span of 10.5 consecutive hours in a day is paid at double time.

Directed shift change on under 48 hours' notice (cl 23.3)200%

Where Metro directs, with less than 48 hours' notice, a change from one rostered shift to another commencing the same day, the first changed shift is paid at double time — a flat replacement of the ordinary rate, not a cumulative penalty. Does not apply where the Bus Operator requests the change.

Overtime (cl 24.2)200%

All time worked in excess of rostered ordinary hours (76 per fortnight, or 80 in a rostered fortnight including ADO-credited hours) is double time. Time off in lieu may be taken hour-for-hour by prior agreement (cl 24.5). Extra rates are not cumulative beyond double the base rate, except public-holiday rates (cl 24.4).

Day Off Cancelled — Saturday or Sunday (cl 24.3(b)(i))200%

Double time where a full-time operator works on a rostered day off, or a part-time operator works a sixth distinct day in the same rostered week that was originally a rostered day off, and that day is a Saturday or Sunday.

Day Off Cancelled — any other day (cl 24.3(b)(ii))150% then 200%

Time and a half for the first 3 hours, double time thereafter.

Day Off Cancelled — public holiday (cl 24.3(b)(iii))250%

Double time and a half where the cancelled day off falls on a public holiday.

Public holiday worked (cl 36.2(c))250%

Double time and a half of the base rate for hours worked on a public holiday. A non-casual whose usual hours fall on the holiday but who is not required to work them is paid the base rate for the day.

Public holiday actual date falling on a Saturday (cl 36.2(d)(i))150%

Where the actual calendar date of a gazetted public holiday falls on a Saturday, work on that Saturday is paid time and a half; the gazetted substitute weekday attracts the full 250%. Boxing Day and New Year's Day expressly follow this rule.

Public holiday actual date falling on a Sunday (cl 36.2(d)(ii))200%

Where the actual calendar date of a gazetted public holiday falls on a Sunday, work on that Sunday is paid double time; the gazetted substitute weekday attracts the full 250%.

Substitute public-holiday weekday (cl 36.2(d)(iii))250%

The gazetted substitute weekday for a public holiday that fell on a weekend is paid the full public-holiday rate.

Christmas Day (cl 36.2(e)(ii))250%

Always paid at double time and a half regardless of the day of the week it falls — the weekend-reduction rule does not apply to Christmas Day.

ANZAC Day (cl 36.2(e)(iv))250%

Always paid at double time and a half regardless of the day it falls, because no substitute public holiday is gazetted when ANZAC Day falls on a weekend.

Casual loading (cl 10.5(b))125%

The published hourly casual rate is the part-time hourly rate (weekly rate ÷ 38) plus a 25% loading, paid in lieu of annual leave, public holidays, personal/carer's leave, compassionate leave, notice of termination and redundancy pay. The loading is not applied to allowances.

Annual leave loading — split-shift Monday-Friday roster (cl 27.11(a))17.5%

Leave loading for Bus Operators on a split-shift Monday-to-Friday roster.

Annual leave loading — all other Bus Operators (cl 27.11(b))20%

Paid to all non-casual Bus Operators after their first anniversary of employment, or on termination including pro rata; part-time operators are paid pro rata.

Notes

  • These figures are the weekly full-time base wage in Australian dollars for Metro Tasmania Bus Operators. The agreement delivers a 13.5% increase from 1 July 2024 (paid as back pay once the agreement was approved in February 2025), then 3.5% from 1 July 2025 and a further 3.5% from 1 July 2026.
  • The agreement also prints an undated "Current Rates" baseline column showing the pre-increase rates; because the source does not tie it to any calendar date, that column is omitted here.
  • Ordinary full-time hours are 38 per week (76 per fortnight). The published hourly part-time rate is the weekly rate divided by 38, rounded to the nearest cent, so those columns are not repeated here. Part-time operators are paid that hourly rate with a minimum payment of 3 hours for each day engaged.
  • Casual Bus Operators are paid the hourly part-time rate plus a 25% loading (shown under Penalties), in lieu of paid leave, public holiday, notice and redundancy entitlements; the loading does not apply to allowances.
  • Bus Operator levels are tenure bands: Level 1 covers the first 12 months of service at Metro, Level 2 more than 12 but less than 24 months, Level 3 more than 24 but less than 36 months, and Level 4 more than 36 months.
  • Bus Operators formally Approved to Train are paid a separate Training Duties hourly rate — $35.54 per hour from 1 July 2024, $36.78 from 1 July 2025 and $38.07 from 1 July 2026 — but only for hours actually spent performing rostered training duties; all other hours are paid at their normal level rate. It is published hourly, so it is listed here rather than mixed into the weekly table above.
  • This agreement covers Metro Tasmania Bus Operators and operates to the complete exclusion of the Passenger Vehicle Transportation Award 2020 — it is the sole industrial instrument for these employees.
