Penalty Rates
Time and a half for the first two hours of overtime worked Monday to Saturday.
Double time after the first two hours of overtime, Monday to Saturday.
All overtime worked on a Sunday is paid at double time.
Rostered shift finishing after 6:00pm.
Rostered shift finishing after midnight.
Ordinary hours worked on a Saturday or Sunday are paid at time and a half.
Work on a public holiday, with a minimum payment of 4 hours.
Recall to duty is paid at overtime rates with a minimum 3-hour payment, including travel time to and from the hospital; 200% applies on Sundays and public holidays.
Applied to the ordinary rate of pay while on annual leave.
Notes
- •These figures are the annual full-time base salary in Australian dollars. The Agreement lifted salaries by 3% from the first full pay period on or after 1 January 2026 (the rates shown), and the Department of Health applied the new rates in payroll from 24 May 2026.
- •Ordinary full-time hours are 38 per week; hourly equivalents are derived from the annual salary.
- •The medical practitioner ladder runs from Intern (MP Level 1) through Resident and Registrar years to Senior Registrar (MP Level 11), with separate ladders for Career Medical Officers (CMO and SCMO) and for Specialists (SMP and SSMP).
- •Specialist salaries are base rates — full-time specialists also receive a 35% clinical loading in lieu of rights to private practice (shown under Allowances).
- •Allowance, on-call and penalty rates are the 1 July 2025 rates under the Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award, which operates alongside the Agreement.
- •On-call rosters must be provided 14 days in advance; duty is capped at 16 consecutive hours, with a mandatory 8-hour break between shifts.
- •The Agreement also provides 12% employer superannuation, five weeks of annual leave with 17.5% leave loading, 10 days of study leave, 10 days of sick leave and the $3,500 annual professional development allowance.
