Good to know

  • The four names, untangled: Shift Worker is a job type, chosen under "What do you do?", for work MyRoster has no award for: you set your own pay from the start. Custom Role is what you pick in the Role & Grade list when your award job's built-in pay doesn't fit; Shift Worker jobs use it underneath, which is why the box is called Custom Role. Custom Rate is the heading over your rate on the Work Profile page until you give your job a name. Custom Pay Rules is the optional, detailed editor inside it, where you set ordinary hours, loadings, weekends, public holidays and overtime yourself.
  • Setting up a new Shift Worker job? The Penalty Rates page has the same Custom Pay Rules row, so you can build your rules from the start.
  • Loadings can be earned by when a shift starts, by the hours worked inside a window, or by when a shift finishes. They can be a percentage, extra dollars an hour, a total hourly rate, or a flat amount per shift.
  • Add another window gives split shifts a second ordinary-hours window.
  • On a day with no ordinary hours (a whole-day Sunday or public holiday rate), Continue Past Midnight keeps that day's rate for the early-morning hours of the next day.
  • Special Rules: Split out a weekday (its page is called Split-out Days) gives one weekday its own rules, for example Fridays. Public holidays uses a region's holidays and lets you change the rate for one holiday. One-off dates pays a single date differently.
  • Overtime starts at time-and-a-half. Different Rates by Day sets weekday, Saturday, Sunday and public holiday overtime separately; Long Shifts Count as Overtime pays hours past a limit as overtime.
  • Cancel at the top left of Custom Pay Rules closes it without keeping your changes. To stop using your rules later, open it again, tap the trash at the top left, then Remove, then Next and Confirm.
  • Your rules only apply after Next and Confirm, and they start on the date you pick: shifts before it keep their old pay.
  • Pay Rule Profiles are kept as soon as you close their list, with no date: editing a profile later changes the pay of every shift tagged with it. Tapping Cancel on the Custom Role box before you confirm throws away profiles you added since you opened it.
  • On a shift, Pay Rules only shows once you have two or more profiles. Shifts you don't change use your default profile. To change the default, touch and hold a profile in the list and tap Set as Default.
  • Paid your own allowances? See the allowances tutorial. On-call pay (On-Call Pay in the same box) is in the on-call tutorial. Using Custom Role for an award job is in the Custom Role tutorial.
  • The rates and amounts in this tutorial are an example.
